CL add clearly states that car has a salvage title. Dude emails and asks for VIN so he can check for a clear title. Clueless CL shopper or some kinda scam?

You’re selling your impala?

Sounds scammy. But some people are that dumb. I always laughed when scammers would contact me about my Bronco and ask if I can “guarantee is in good running conditions”.
Well it says it’s thrown a rod in the ad, so no.

Probably just someone who wants to be careful (assuming what you’re selling costs more than ~3k or so). Remember, you’re just a random seller to that guy; I wouldn’t trust a random seller to really disclose the title’s status, why would you assume he would?

He probably just read the main description and missed the column of information where the title status is displayed.

I had a guy on the phone screaming at me once: “Listen, got to GUARANTEE that this car will last me a long time!” “I’m not guaranteeing jack shit.” “Oh.”

That made me chuckle.
CL is funny. Ultimately, I enjoy using it and having human-on-human interactions to buy and sell things. I had a
false negative
a few weeks ago when a seller seemed a little too accommodating, but I bought from him anyhow. I’m wondering if this is another one of those.

I had a person who sounded obviously male call me and say they had three girls and “I swear on my name ...” and would I take three thousand cash?

I didn’t know you could drive a salvaged car is California... Is the title rebuilt?
![]() 03/14/2017 at 23:42 |

I’m not sure what you mean. Is “rebuilt” what they call the title in your state when the insurance company writes it off and someone repairs it and puts it back on the road?

Basically.

Sometimes people check the vin for where the damage on the car happened, when it happened, and the amount of damage through carfax. And sometimes people do miss what you put on the post but I would just tell him that its not clean and see what he says. But probably a scam

In Commifornia, we call it a salvage title.

I think in most places it gets the salvage title when it is totaled, but then you can get a rebuilt title to indicate that it has been repaired successfully. I’ve never been clear on the implications of either sort of title for registering and driving though.

Why couldn’t it just be a guy who wants to run the CarFax himself? While admittedly clumsy with words—”clean title”—I would and have done that on any ad that doesn’t just list the VIN outright. I’m more curious why you don’t want to reveal the VIN, frankly.

In Ca, there’s just the salvage title that says it was written off by the insurance company.

I honestly don’t know whether or not it’s good to reveal the VIN. That’s why I asked Oppo about it. As it turns out, the guy is solid and he wants to buy the car today.

Guy turns out to be solid. I told him that it was a salvage title in my name. He wants to come and likely buy the car today. I think it’s priced to sell.

Ah ok then he probably just missed it then. I have never been scared of a salvage as long as it was fixed right. I have seen cars from fixable/non-salvage accidents be way more unsafe than any salvage cars.

Agreed.
